The Patch Test
What a patch test is
A patch test is a small, controlled application of the same tint, dye, pigment, lamination solution, or other chemical product that will be used during your treatment. A small amount is applied to a discreet area of skin (typically behind the ear or on the inner forearm) and left to develop for the manufacturer's recommended time. This lets us check how your skin responds before any product is used on the treatment area.
The 48-hour rule
Patch tests must be carried out at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. This window gives the skin time to show any delayed sensitivity, contact dermatitis, or allergic response. A patch test performed on the same day as treatment does not satisfy this rule and is not a valid safety check.
If you have ever had a reaction to hair colour, brow tint, lash tint, lamination solution, henna, PPD, or any semi-permanent pigment, you must inform your technician before booking — regardless of how long ago the reaction occurred.
How to book a patch test
Patch tests are booked as a standalone short consultation. To book:
- Visit /clinic-booking and select Patch Test (£25, 15 min) from the treatment list.
- Choose your preferred Glasgow or Edinburgh location and date.
- Pay the £25 deposit to secure your patch test slot.
- Attend the appointment. Your technician will apply the test product and explain what to watch for over the next 48 hours.
- Book your full treatment once no reaction is observed.
If you cannot attend a separate appointment, contact us on 0141 489 0537 (main line), WhatsApp (07354 246805) and we will arrange a patch test at the start of your treatment slot (an additional 15 minutes and £25 will apply).
What to expect on the day
Your technician will:
- Discuss any history of skin sensitivity, allergies, or previous reactions
- Apply a small amount of the product to a discreet skin area
- Explain what reactions to watch for over the next 48 hours (redness, swelling, itching, blistering)
- Record the patch test outcome on your client record against the specific product used
If any reaction occurs, do not proceed with the booked treatment and contact us immediately. Your deposit will be transferred to an alternative treatment or refunded in full.
Declining a Patch Test (where clinically appropriate)
When this option is offered
For some treatments, the manufacturer's safety guidance permits an alternative screening pathway alongside the standard 48-hour patch test. Where this applies, you may choose to decline the patch test and proceed with treatment only after signing the waiver set out in this section.
A waiver is not a substitute for a patch test where the manufacturer's instructions require a patch test. In those cases, the patch test is mandatory: see Section B.3 — Treatments where decline is not permitted below.
Treatments where decline is permitted
The following treatments can proceed with a signed waiver in place of a patch test, provided the manufacturer's guidance permits:
| Treatment | Waiver option available |
|---|---|
| Lash Lift & Tint | Yes — patch test or waiver |
| Lash Lift (no tint) | Yes — waiver only |
| Brow Shape & Tint | Yes — patch test or waiver |
| Brow Wax & Tint | Yes — patch test or waiver |
| Brow Lamination | Yes — patch test or waiver |
Treatments where decline is not permitted
The following treatments require a mandatory 48-hour patch test before any appointment can proceed. A waiver is not available for these services:
| Treatment | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Hair Colour (full head, root, or tone) | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Highlights | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Balayage | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Microneedling (where pigment is used) | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Microblading | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Ombre / Powder Brows | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Combination Brows | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Lip Blush | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Lip Colour Correction | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Lash Enhancement Liner | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Classic Eyeliner | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
| Winged Eyeliner | Mandatory patch test — no waiver |
Important: This list reflects the treatments booked through our online booking system at Obsidian Clinics' Glasgow and Edinburgh locations. If you are booking an SPMU correction, remedial, or other advanced pigment service, additional manufacturer guidance may apply — your technician will confirm at consultation.
What you are acknowledging by signing
By signing the waiver below in place of a patch test, you confirm and acknowledge that:
- You have no known history of allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, or skin sensitivity to the products or ingredients used in the selected treatment.
- You have no current contraindication to the treatment, including but not limited to: pregnancy, breastfeeding (where relevant), active skin infection or inflammation at the treatment site, recent use of isotretinoin / Accutane, recent chemical peel, recent laser treatment, or autoimmune flare affecting the treatment area.
- You have voluntarily chosen to proceed without a 48-hour patch test, having been informed of the purpose, procedure, and limitation of a patch test.
- You release Obsidian Clinics, its practitioners, and its staff from any liability for adverse reactions, allergic responses, skin irritation, or related injury arising from or attributable to the decision not to undergo a patch test where one was clinically advised but not mandatory.
- You understand that a reaction may still occur despite the absence of any prior history, and that Obsidian Clinics cannot guarantee a reaction-free outcome where a patch test has not been performed.
- You have had the opportunity to ask questions and have received satisfactory answers before signing.
This waiver applies only to the specific treatment named in your booking. It does not extend to future treatments, additional treatments added at the appointment, or different products used on the day. A new waiver or patch test will be required if your treatment plan changes.
For the full terms governing your appointment, see our Terms & Conditions and Cancellation & Booking Policy.
Sign & Date
The booking flow at /clinic-booking records your acknowledgment of this waiver as a single checkbox per treatment when a waiver option is offered, before your deposit payment is taken. The acknowledgment is timestamped and saved to your booking record alongside the treatment name.
If you need to withdraw a signed acknowledgment or confirm a change to your patch test status, contact us before your appointment so we can update your record.
