Treatment Options

Our SPMU Removal & Correction Services

Every client’s situation is different. During your consultation we will advise which approach — or combination of approaches — is most appropriate for your skin, your pigment, and your goals.

Laser Removal

Q-switched laser technology targets and breaks down pigment beneath the skin. Highly effective for darker, more saturated pigments. Multiple sessions may be required depending on pigment depth and colour. Sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart to allow full healing between treatments.

Most effective for dark pigment

Saline Removal

A natural, osmotic removal method using a specialist saline solution. Suitable for all pigment colours and skin types, including those where laser is not appropriate. Works by drawing pigment to the skin’s surface over a series of sessions. Gentler than laser for sensitive skins.

Suitable for all skin types

Colour & Shape Correction

For SPMU that has shifted to an undesirable hue — ashy grey, warm orange, or blue — colour correction techniques neutralise and rebalance the tone. Shape correction addresses symmetry issues, outdated arch styles, or mapping that no longer suits your face. Often achieved without full removal.

Your Journey

What to Expect

We take time to understand your situation fully before recommending any treatment. Our process is designed to be transparent, comfortable, and tailored to you.

  1. Initial Consultation

We begin with a thorough assessment of your existing SPMU: pigment type, depth, colour, age, and the condition of the treated skin. We discuss your goals — full removal, partial fading, correction, or a combination — and explain which options are most realistic for your situation.

  2. Patch Test & Treatment Plan

A patch test is carried out where appropriate. We create a written treatment plan including the recommended method, estimated number of sessions, spacing between sessions, and expected outcomes at each stage. No surprises.

  3. Treatment Sessions

Removal and correction is a gradual process. Each session is performed carefully to minimise discomfort and allow your skin adequate recovery time between appointments. We monitor progress at each visit and adjust the approach as needed.

  4. Healing & Aftercare

Full written aftercare instructions are provided after each session. It is essential to protect treated areas from sun exposure and to keep the skin moisturised as directed. Results continue to develop during the healing period between sessions.

  5. Review & Next Steps

At the end of your treatment course, we review the outcome together. If further correction or fresh SPMU application is desired, we can discuss next steps including our full range of SPMU services and the Obsidian Academy’s Remedial & Correction Programme for practitioners seeking advanced training.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

This varies considerably depending on the pigment type, colour, depth, and age of your SPMU, as well as your skin type and the removal method used. Laser removal typically requires 4–8 sessions for significant fading, with complete removal taking longer in some cases. Saline removal may require a similar number of sessions. During your consultation, we will give you a realistic assessment based on your specific situation — we never make promises we cannot keep.
Discomfort levels vary by method and individual. Laser removal can feel like a quick snap against the skin — most clients describe it as tolerable. Saline removal is generally gentler. We take your comfort seriously and can apply topical numbing cream prior to treatment. Our practitioners work at a pace that suits you, and we will never rush a session.
Most colours respond well to removal, though some are more challenging than others. Dark browns and blacks respond well to laser. Lighter, more saturated, or unusual pigment colours (such as those used in cosmetic tattooing) may respond better to saline removal. Certain pigments containing white or titanium dioxide can sometimes darken initially with laser — which is why an experienced assessment before treatment is essential. We will always advise on the most appropriate method for your specific pigment.
Removal aims to eliminate the existing pigment entirely or sufficiently to allow fresh SPMU application. Correction works with the existing pigment — either neutralising an undesirable colour (e.g., using a warm-toned pigment over a grey brow) or reshaping/overworking the design to improve symmetry and proportion. Correction is often faster and less intensive than full removal, and may be all that is needed to transform your result. During your consultation, we will explore both options and help you decide which is right for you.
We recommend a minimum of 6–8 weeks between sessions to allow the skin to fully heal and the pigment to continue fading naturally during the recovery period. Rushing sessions is counterproductive — the skin needs time to complete its regenerative process, and treating too soon can cause unnecessary trauma. We will schedule your sessions at the correct intervals and monitor your progress at each visit.
Extremely common — and you have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about with us. We see clients regularly who are distressed about SPMU that has not turned out as expected. Whether it has faded to an unflattering colour, the shape was never quite right, or the treatment was simply not what you were promised — we are a judgement-free clinic. Our role is to assess your situation with honesty, explain your options clearly, and help you feel confident in a path forward. Many clients leave their initial consultation feeling relieved to have a plan.
